Why do the 12 kW packages ship with 13.2 kW of actual solar instead of exactly 12 kW?
The “12 kW” label refers to the system class, but each package includes 24 solar panels rated at 550W each, providing 13.2 kW of total panel capacity.
The additional capacity helps offset real-world production losses caused by heat, dust, wiring, changing sun angles, and other operating conditions. It also supports stronger winter performance, when shorter days and lower sun angles reduce solar production.
The 24-panel configuration also properly completes the IronRidge ground-mount array, which is designed in groups of four panels, while still leaving room for future expansion.
These kits are listed as a great starter package for a complete off-grid home. What size home does a 12 kW system actually support?
The product description estimates approximately 59,400 Wh of daily production based on 4.5 peak sun hours. That aligns well with a home using around 1,700 kWh per month.
For many customers, that is enough to support a mid-sized home with a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, washing machine, home office, lighting, and one or two mini-split systems without operating too close to the system's limit.
Heavy electric heating, central air conditioning running throughout the day, or frequent electric water heating can quickly push usage above 2,000 to 2,500 kWh per month. Customers living off-grid often tell us that switching to propane for water heating and using a wood stove for backup heat made a greater difference than adding more solar panels.

The 12 kW collection offers both roof mount and ground mount options. Which one is right for my property?
A roof mount is a good option when your roof has enough unobstructed space for 24 panels, faces a favorable direction, and receives minimal shade throughout the day. Roof mounts preserve ground space and generally cost less upfront because they use the home's existing structure.
The included IronRidge rail system is designed for a straightforward roof installation, and capable DIYers may be able to complete much of the mounting work themselves. Final electrical connections should still be completed or inspected by a licensed electrician.
Ground mounts cost more upfront because they require posts, framing, and additional site preparation, but they give you greater control over panel orientation and tilt angle. They also make it much easier to clear snow, wash the panels, inspect wiring, and perform routine maintenance.
Based on trends we have observed from support requests, customers in northern climates and those who plan to handle their own maintenance are often happier with a ground mount after experiencing their first winter.
The Sol-Ark 18K is scalable up to 12 units. Is that relevant for a residential off-grid customer, or is it mainly a commercial feature?
For most single-family homes, the ability to connect as many as 12 units is primarily a commercial feature. That level of scalability is more relevant for farms, small businesses, multi-building properties, and other installations with unusually large power requirements.
For residential use, what matters most is the ability to add another Sol-Ark 18K later if your energy needs increase. Two units can provide substantial capacity for demanding residential loads, including large HVAC systems, well pumps, workshop equipment, and EV charging, depending on the final system design.
From what we see in real customer installations, buyers who later add a workshop, guest house, or other major load appreciate being able to expand the inverter system without replacing their original equipment. That flexibility provides real value even if the system never approaches the full 12-unit limit.
There is a solar combiner box included in these kits. What does it do, and why does it matter for a 12 kW system?
A solar combiner box collects power from multiple strings of solar panels and combines them into a single DC feed that runs to the inverter.
Because a 24-panel array is wired in multiple strings, the combiner box gives each string its own overcurrent protection before the power is combined. This helps protect the panels and wiring if a fault occurs in one of the strings.
The combiner box included with these packages is also designed to support future expansion, with capacity for additional panel strings if you decide to add more solar later.
Without an expandable combiner box, adding panels may require significant changes to the existing DC wiring. With one already installed, future expansion can be completed much more cleanly and efficiently.
