Frequently Asked Questions About 17KW Solar Packages
This collection includes both a Sol-Ark 15K and a Sol-Ark 18K inverter option. How do I know which one is right for my 17 kW system?
The Sol-Ark 15K delivers 15,000W of continuous output and is included in the Essential Kit. It can handle most residential loads, including well pumps, mini-splits, and standard 240V circuits.
The Sol-Ark 18K increases continuous output to 18,000W and provides up to 36 kW of surge capacity. That additional capacity matters if you plan to run a larger HVAC system, operate multiple heavy motors at the same time, or add a second inverter in parallel later.
For a home using around 2,376 kWh per month, the Sol-Ark 18K provides more headroom during periods when several large loads are running simultaneously. The Sol-Ark 15K may be the better value when your loads are moderate and predictable.
Based on our experience designing off-grid systems, the most important number is not your average consumption. It is the maximum amount of power you may use at the same time on your busiest day.
With 32 panels and a 17.6 kW array, is all that solar usable, or does it exceed what the Sol-Ark can handle?
The 17.6 kW solar array falls within the input limits of both inverter options. The Sol-Ark 18K supports up to 28.8 kW of DC-coupled solar across its three MPPT channels, along with additional solar capacity through AC coupling.
The Sol-Ark 15K supports up to 19,500W of PV input, so it can also accommodate the 17.6 kW array with reasonable margin.
The additional panel capacity is especially useful during winter, when shorter days and lower sun angles reduce production, and during partial cloud cover, when the array continues producing at a lower level.
A larger array also helps recharge the battery bank more quickly after several cloudy days, which can directly reduce generator runtime. Customers living off-grid often tell us they appreciate the extra solar capacity most after experiencing their first winter.
What is the Essential Kit in this collection, and how is it different from the Complete kits?
The Essential Kit is a lower-cost entry point built around the Sol-Ark 15K inverter, a 16 kWh OMO Liberty battery, and 31 bifacial 550W solar panels.
It includes the main power-generation and storage components, but it does not include mounting hardware, solar wiring, breakers, or disconnects. It is designed for experienced DIY installers or customers working with a local electrician who plans to source the remaining balance-of-system components separately.
The Complete kits include IronRidge mounting rails, a solar combiner box, a gutter box, 500 feet of direct burial PV wire, AC cabling, a 4/0 AC main line, and an MC4 crimping kit.
If this is your first solar installation, a Complete kit is generally the better starting point. The Essential Kit may be a better value if you already have racking, access to a local electrical supplier, or a custom system design. Contact us if you are unsure which option fits your project.
These kits are listed for homes using around 2,376 kWh per month. What does a household that size look like, and is this still a good fit if my usage is lower?
A home using approximately 2,376 kWh per month is usually powering more than basic household loads. That may include a three- or four-bedroom home with a well pump, full kitchen, multiple mini-splits, a washer and dryer, a home office, and normal daily appliance use without aggressive conservation.
It could also describe a smaller home with additional loads such as workshop equipment, irrigation pumps, farm equipment, or another outbuilding.
If your monthly usage is closer to 1,500 to 2,000 kWh, a 17 kW system may still be a strong fit. The additional solar capacity provides a larger winter production buffer, faster battery charging, and room to add larger loads later without replacing the original array.
From what we see in real customer installations, buyers who choose a larger array often appreciate the flexibility when they later add a workshop, guest cabin, or other major load.
How does the 16 kWh OMO Liberty battery compare with the OMO Stack and Freedom Series options, and can they be mixed?
The OMO Liberty is a 16 kWh, 48V lithium battery with built-in heating, Bluetooth monitoring, and an integrated LCD display. It is designed for regular daily cycling in off-grid applications.
The OMO Freedom Series batteries provide 32 kWh of storage per unit. One Freedom Series battery offers approximately the same capacity as two Liberty batteries in a single enclosure, making it a practical option for customers who want a larger battery bank with fewer individual units.
OMO Stack batteries are 5.12 kWh modular units that stack vertically and can be added one at a time. This makes them the most flexible option for customers who want to begin with a smaller battery bank and expand gradually.
Mixing different battery brands or models on the same inverter is generally not recommended because differences in battery management systems, voltage behavior, and communication protocols can create performance or reliability issues. It is best to select one battery line and continue using that same line as the system expands.
