Why do I Need a Backup Generator with my Off-Grid Solar System?
A key component in any true off-grid system is a backup generator. The generator's primary function in an off-grid system is to provide supplemental power to keep the system's battery bank charged when solar production is low. Times such as; during the evening, extended overcast periods and storms or before snow can be cleared from your solar array. So, the intent of a backup generator in an off-grid solar system isn't necessarily exactly the same as a traditional whole house backup generator, which would simply be used to run your home when grid power goes out. If sized accordingly, an off-grid backup generator could temporarily serve both purposes with proper load management. But, the backup generator primarily serves to supplement your solar array when its production falls below what's necessary to keep your battery storage properly charged.
