What kind of home or property is a 40 kW system actually built for?
The 40.15 kW array is estimated to produce approximately 180,675 Wh per day based on 4.5 peak sun hours, making it suitable for properties using around 5,420 kWh per month.
That level of consumption is several times higher than the average household and typically includes a large primary residence plus another major load, such as a working shop, barn, agricultural equipment, cold storage, rental cabin, or multiple structures operating from the same system.
If your monthly consumption is closer to 2,000 to 3,000 kWh, a smaller package will likely be a better fit. A 40 kW system makes the most sense when the property combines normal residential use with substantial farm, business, or outbuilding loads.
The larger array also creates additional winter production capacity. Based on our experience designing off-grid systems, buyers in this tier almost always have a significant load beyond the main house.
Why do these kits use three Sol-Ark 18K inverters, and what does 54,000W of continuous output mean in practice?
Three Sol-Ark 18K inverters operating together provide 54,000W of combined continuous output and up to 108,000W of combined surge capacity for 10 seconds.
This capacity becomes important when several large loads operate at the same time. A well pump, central HVAC system, workshop compressor, agricultural equipment, and normal household loads can create a combined demand of 25,000 to 35,000W without anything unusual happening.
Using three inverters gives the system enough headroom to manage those loads without operating continuously near its maximum output, which can support more stable performance and long-term reliability.
Each inverter also has three MPPT channels, providing nine independent solar inputs across the full system. This gives the installer more flexibility when dividing the array across different orientations, tilt angles, or shading conditions.
How much battery storage do I need, and what do the Freedom Series options cover?
The 40 kW collection offers one, two, or three OMO Freedom Series batteries, with each unit providing 32 kWh of storage. The available configurations range from 32 kWh to 96 kWh total.
A property using approximately 5,420 kWh per month averages around 180 kWh per day. At that consumption level, a 96 kWh battery bank provides roughly half a day of stored energy before accounting for reserve settings, inverter losses, and variations in actual load.
One 32 kWh battery is best suited to a property with a generator that is actively integrated into the system. Two batteries provide 64 kWh and may cover overnight demand plus a short low-production period. Three batteries provide 96 kWh and are better suited to northern climates, longer overcast periods, or properties with irregular high-demand events.
Freedom Series batteries include built-in heating elements to support safe charging in cold conditions, along with Bluetooth monitoring and an LCD display for reviewing battery status and system performance.
How does a 40 kW system perform in winter, and do I still need a generator?
Yes. A properly integrated generator should generally be considered part of the design for a system and property of this size.
In northern states, peak sun hours may fall from approximately 5.5 to 6 hours per day in summer to around 3 to 3.5 hours during winter. Shorter days, lower sun angles, snow, and extended cloud cover can significantly reduce daily production.
The array may still cover the property's needs on many winter days, but consecutive low-production days can quickly draw down even a large battery bank.
The Sol-Ark 18K includes a dedicated generator input and can be configured to request generator operation when the batteries fall below a selected state of charge. The generator can then support active loads, recharge the batteries to a target level, and shut down when backup power is no longer needed.
Based on trends we have observed from support requests, customers who plan for generator use from the beginning generally have a smoother winter experience than those attempting to eliminate it through battery storage alone.
What is The Ultimate 40 kW kit, and who is it actually for?
The Ultimate combines the same 73-panel solar array with one Sol-Ark 18K-2P inverter, two 32 kWh OMO Freedom Series batteries, a Kubota GL14000 diesel generator with auto-start, an EMP Shield, and a Sinclair season-adjustable ground mount.
The main difference from the standard configurations is inverter output. The Ultimate provides 18,000W of continuous inverter output, while the standard three-inverter packages provide 54,000W of combined continuous output.
If your peak simultaneous demand regularly approaches or exceeds 15,000 to 18,000W, a standard three-inverter configuration is the better fit. The Ultimate is more appropriate when loads are moderate but the buyer wants a complete package with a professional-grade generator, large battery bank, ground mount, and system protection already selected and integrated.
The Kubota GL14000 is designed for regular, long-term backup operation. The EMP Shield is included to help protect the inverter and connected electronics from severe electrical transients and electromagnetic events.
Based on what we see in real customer installations, The Ultimate is best suited to permanent off-grid residences where the owner wants the major system components matched from the beginning rather than purchased and integrated in separate stages.
